What is Makhana
Makhana, also called fox nuts or lotus seeds, are puffed seeds harvested from the Euryale ferox plant. Bihar produces over 90% of the world's supply, with Darbhanga as the trading capital.
Why Western Buyers Care
Makhana is gluten-free, low-calorie, high-protein, and air-popped — checking every box on the modern healthy-snack wish list. Whole Foods, Sprouts, and major UK retailers have all added flavoured makhana SKUs in the last two years.
Grades and Sizing
Makhana is graded by puff size: 4-Suta, 5-Suta, 6-Suta, and Lawa. Larger puffs (5-Suta and 6-Suta) command premium pricing and are preferred for retail packaging. Smaller grades go into trail mixes and processing.
Shelf Life and Packaging
Properly packed Makhana has a 12-month shelf life. Vacuum-sealed nitrogen-flushed pouches are now standard for export to retain crunch and prevent moisture pickup during ocean transit.
